Funeral services for Rose M. Hawk, 90, of Fort Thompson will be 10:00 am Friday, August 10, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Thompson with burial in the Lakeview Cemetery at Fort Thompson. Wake services will be Wednesday and Thursday evening at 8:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Thompson.
Melvina Rose Seeking Land Hawk was born March 7, 1922 to Gregory and Annie (Little Cloud) Seeking Land. She was a fourth generation descendant of Chief Drifting Goose. She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Stephan, SD. She met and later married Albert Hawk on February 9, 1962 in Pierre, SD. Through this marriage they had three children Melvin, Earlwyn, and Rozelle. Rose also had a special place in her heart for her step children Myrna, Clifford, Curtis, Alvin, Allen, Velsworth, and many other step children. After her husband’s death she started working at the Crow Creek Elementary School as a cook. In 1991, after 33 years she retired and enjoyed her home life, church activities, and especially the Church Congress Conference trips. Rose was very active in the St. Joseph and St. Mary Society. In 2004, Rose entered the Riverview Retirement Home where she lived until 2011 before moving to Firesteel Nursing Home in Mitchell for six months. In August of 2011 she became a resident at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain where she remained until the time of her passing.
Rose passed away on August 7, 2012 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 90 years and leaves behind two children Melvin Hawk and wife Mary and Rozelle Lockwood and husband Darrell; a special niece and nephew Carole Seeking Land and Larry Barker; 15 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; 15 great great grandchildren; and many step grandchildren to numerous to mention. Preceding her in death were her parents, five brothers, four sisters; her son Earlwyn Hawk, special daughter-in-law Sharon Hawk, grandchildren Robbie Hawk, Christopher Fallis, Austin Hawk, Sr., and great grandchild Chris-Lee Hawk.
